The production of a major motion picture today is usually the result of spending millions of dollars and the cooperation of hundreds of people— a process that passes through committees, hoards of executives and rigorous “audience testing.” While modern technology will continue to make it easier for a few to make movies on smaller and smaller budgets, the beauty of the record business is that it’s still possible and has been for some time, for one or two people working together to retreat into a studio, basement or bedroom and emerge with a completed work and their original vision intact; unadulterated by committees, hoards of executives or radio “audience testing.”
It is my experience that often the tightest records from start to finish—records that yield a lifetime of musical pleasure and insights and are packed with honest, clear, unfettered emotion—are the result of the work of a small group not a large one. While records like the one you’re holding in your hand don’t come along very often, it is no surprise it is largely the combined vision and work of just two people, a remarkable husband—and—wife team, Sunny and Jamie Hawkins.
Both stellar songwriters on their own, one only needs to listen to the opening of this album to understand the mission behind this entire work. Sunny, aided by her newlywed husband producer, Jamie (a talented artist in his own right), crafted this album in their San Francisco bay area apartment—far away from industry pressures and influences. As a result, in a music marketplace where much of what clogs the airways makes one feel as though they have been rolling in muck and slime, the clean and refreshing approach Sunny and Jamie take in the crafting of their inspirational and uplifting songs feel as invigorating and as replenishing as a long, shower with multiple shower heads hitting every part of your body. In Sunny’s personal and spiritual conversation with her Creator (captured on track one) it feels as though we are peeking in on a very intimate conversation. In this intro conversation Sunny announces, “I’m just somebody trying to be used/to share your love with folks who don’t know/here am I send me I’ll go/got to tell the world about you/can’t stop till everybody knows/here am I send me I’ll go.” In this brief, less than two minute opening, she shares with us her conversation with her Creator, the direction she has heard in these communications and the spiritual mistakes she has made, the lessons she has learned, the importance of her current mission and most significantly, her prayer to be blessed with the ability to spread the word she has heard in those talks with God. It will become obvious in your first listen to this record, that those prayers were answered. We are extremely proud to release this body of work created and directed by those intimate discussions. Even though all of us can also have such intimate conversations if we simply listen closely, through Sunny, it’s easier to hear the voice that is actually speaking all the time, everywhere. Enjoy on myriad levels.
We hope you receive a lifetime of enjoyment from this special collection of songs.
