This business can take its toll on optimists. Even those external optimists who firmly in fairness, spirituality and karma often exit the music business disillusioned, crestfallen and dumbfounded by the troubling inequities that seem to ravage the musical landscape. Just as local TV news reporters try to grapple with the apparent randomness of the wake left behind by a tornado, true music lovers following the music business often are left scratching their heads when a lip-synching non-singing “performer” with nothing to say, suddenly reaps instant success while a diverse array of truly brilliant new artists struggle to have their work heard by the public.

This inequity may be troubling for the connoisseur of good music but it can be absolutely devastating for the artist feeling that he/she has something important to say. The spiritual and emotional casualties suffered by those yearning to bring the world inspiring new sounds unfettered by genre classifications can tear through a creative community much like a Midwest cyclone’s effects on a trailer park. The cumulative effect of industry mergers reaching epic proportions, rampant theft of music, unprecedented radio consolidation and the age-old initial resistance to artists not willing to be neatly and easily defined is often a fatal blow to lofty career aspirations. To add insult to injury, historically, those artists with the greatest contributions to mankind have never been fully appreciated during their lifetime (hard to believe, but just think Ray Charles, who recorded over 250 albums during his lifetime, never earned a platinum disc until his death). In today’s business environment, most artists who have gotten a major shot at success but whose sales don’t immediately live up to expectations don’t get a second chance. The disappointment can be so debilitating that many don’t even try to continue to pursue the dream that usually has fueled them their entire lives.

Meet an exception to this usual rule. LINA was fortunate to have one such major shot at success with her uniquely different but fresh approach to music. All the bells and whistles were present and the planets seemed to be aligned in her favor. High level support from a big record company, astounding critical acclaim, exposure as an opening act on a major tour and many of the tools a legion of talented folks around the world would give their right arm for (videos, big budget photo shoots etc.).

With Lina poised to live up to the high expectations of critics around the world who had almost universally predicted her success, her debut record was packed on hundreds of trucks around the country for distribution on September 11th 2001 to every music retail outlet for an in-store release date of September 18th

.

It is probably an understatement that no one in this country or around the world really was quite focused on a release by a new artist on this day, or for that matter, the days or weeks following. Whether this unfortunate timing of Lina’s first note on the world stage was the demise of her first offering can be debated by musical forensic scientists; but as painful as dreams unfulfilled can be, Lina has taken her experience and has rebounded undeterred. In fact, her mission to “spread the love” and to “start the healing” has become more passionate and focused as a result of not grabbing the brass ring on her initial trip around the musical carousel.

Instead of focusing on the negative, Lina retreated with her wonderfully talented production team (Travis House and Jeeve) to craft some of the most inspiring songs of perseverance, belief in self and empowerment that you will ever hear -- themes that course their way through the veins of the body of work in your hands now. Lina has a voice and a point of view important to the world now. Listen closely. Along with soothing, intricately woven tracks polished with sweet harmonies and just damn good writing, Lina, throughout her album, also offers some universal truths. Without being preachy or self-righteous she reappears here speaking with a spirit strengthened by adversity and a soul determined to encourage others to learn from all of life's experiences and challenges. The Inner Beauty Movement is like a manual on how to take the rubble created by a devastating tornado and turns it into the essential building blocks for a positive outlook and a meaningful and fulfilling existence.

Not only has Lina infused soul and a uniquely positive spirit into the record in your hands, but she has also turned the messages contained in the CD into an overall crusade, [like the mission of this label (dedicated to real artists committed to spreading positive energy. She sums these feelings up neatly in the track entitled “I Am”)]. In addition to spreading the “Inner Beauty Movement” (see more on this at www.hiddenbeach.com) Lina has created and supported the “Save Your Soul” project, which is less of a compilation album of like minded artist than it is a true musical campaign designed to shine a spotlight on unsigned artists who, in spite of the trials and tribulations they have faced in trying to achieve their musical dreams, continue to strive to make honest, real and innovative music. We are proud to have this sweet and talented soldier crusading on behalf of all people who care about integrity in music as part of the ever-growing Hidden Beach army.
