For anyone who has followed the small text found under the CD trays of Hidden Beach releases, it should be clear by now that we believe that our very own Jill Scott, is not only “the real thing” but one of the most evolved creative forces walking the face of the planet. This belief, held firm since the moment of her original in-studio Hidden Beach audition through the recording of her first project, has become more deeply entrenched each day as she has grown both as an artist and even more as a human being. Frankly, to say that Jill is one of the most talented artists of her generation has not only become an accepted fact but we believe it is an understatement. The depth and diversity of her talent (unfortunately a rarity in today’s modern music scene), continues to expand and she hasn’t even peaked yet! We’ve pulled together the enclosed collection of collaborations where Jill is the common thread—not to flaunt Jill’s skills— but to simply provide further proof of the strong statements we have made.
It seems that when Jill enters a studio or a stage with legends such as Al Jarreau or talented new comers like Lupe Fiasco, she alters the DNA of everybody in the room. The fascinating thing that happens when you add this magical single ingredient —spelled J.I.L.L. S.C.O.T.T. —to different recipes is that it never yields the same taste. Equally as comfortable in her skin and voice on a Hip-Hop stage with the likes of the fabulous Roots as she is trading solos with George Benson and every performer who has worked with her will tell you that her presence dramatically changes the flavor of the dish they were preparing. We think, and hope you will soon agree after savoring this entire collaborations project, that her unique talent makes every serving in which she’s added her spice to a more filling experience.
Usually, tracks from Hip-Hop stars such as Common and Mos Def are not found on an album featuring Gospel powerhouse Kirk Franklin or instrumental favorites like Chris Botti or Sergio Mendes. However, we think in this case this single consistent ingredient makes all the offerings suitable for consumption in one sitting. While the compilation of this eclectic smorgasbord of collaborations in one place seems like a big meal, we firmly believe that even after it is fully consumed, it will leave you only wanting more. We ask that you treat this special project not as a complete fifteen course meal, but as fifteen delicious appetizers preceding the in-studio feast Jill is cooking up for us all later this year.
Hopefully, this special project taken along with her previous released albums: Who Is Jill Scott?, Experience Jill Scott, and Beautifully Human—will keep you full until that feast is served.
