Hidden Beach Celebrates Black History Month

- Outdoor media campaign launches “Making Black History” Campaign -

Onitsha

February 12, 2008 (Santa Monica, CA) Hidden Beach Recordings is celebrating Black History month this year with an outdoor media campaign in Los Angeles. Timed to maximize industry awareness to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Grammy Awards, the outdoor media campaign consists of one dozen 30-sheet billboards in the Hollywood, South-Central, and Crenshaw districts of Los Angeles, as well as the City of Inglewood.

Thornell Jones, Marketing for Hidden Beach says “People often think of History as something from the past. With our campaign, we’re saying that artists and their music which are relevant today will be relevant in the future. Hidden Beach has a commitment to quality music and artists. In a declining marketplace – it’s a notable distinction which sets this label apart, not to mention the fact that Hidden Beach is Black owned and operated.”If you’re in Los Angeles, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Billboards making label history.

COMMUNITY INVITED TO A CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH HIDDEN BEACH RECORDING ARTIST DR. CORNEL WEST

Mark Hayes of “Good Day Atlanta” To Moderate Event With Discussions
From New CD Project Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations

Atlanta, Georgia – February 8, 2008— As Black History Month is a time to pay honor to African American achievers and trailblazers of the past and present, the Atlanta community is invited to a special evening with best-selling author, orator, and recording artist Dr. Cornel West. The event will take place on Monday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Morehouse College King Chapel located at 830 Westview Drive.

Dr. Cornel West’s third album project, Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations, under the Hidden Beach Forum label and produced by Mike Dailey and Clifton West of Black Men Who Mean Business, Sacramento-based writers and producers, will serve as the focal point of discussion at the event. West’s new CD project gives an explosive critique- addressing major issues such as racial profiling, politics, 9/11, war, and a litany of other concerns of not just Black people but America at large. Joining in the effort are Hip Hop and R&B heavy hitters like Prince, Andre 3000, Black Thought, Kanye West protégé’ Rhymefest, KRS-1, Talib Kweli, Dave Hollister, and the late Gerald LeVert, among others, who creatively share the mic on this musical collaboration.

“I am excited to be a part of this upcoming momentous event as we take time to reflect and celebrate while paying tribute to those African Americans who helped make a significant difference in our country,” stated Dr. Cornel West. “Because of the foundation laid through decades of sacrifice and contributions by our forefathers, I am afforded the opportunity to serve and make a difference as well.”

The event is presented by The Home Depot, which is celebrating its diversity with a series of events and programs for associates throughout the month. Other sponsors include Hidden Beach Recordings/Forum, Alpha Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Morehouse African American Studies Department.

“In light of Dr. Cornel West’s massive body of relevant work over the years and his recent CD release, we felt this was the perfect opportunity to show what Black History Month is all about,” said K. Michelle Sourie Johnson, director of supplier diversity, The Home Depot.

The event is free and open to the public for those who donate any new book relevant to black history and suitable for students K-5. Donated books will be distributed to local public schools.

“NEVER FORGET- A NIGHT WITH DR. CORNEL WEST AND TAVIS SMILEY”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“NEVER FORGET- A NIGHT WITH DR. CORNEL WEST AND TAVIS SMILEY”

Media personality Tavis Smiley to host a listening experience in honor of Dr. Cornel West’s first infusion album on Hidden Beach Recordings, Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations.

Los Angeles, Dec. 11, 2007 — Tavis Smiley, Allstate, and Hidden Beach Recordings will host a black carpet affair featuring renowned professor Dr. Cornel West in his latest novel approach at empowering our community through word and song on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007.

This listening experience, titled “Never Forget,” (appropriately named after Dr. West’s most recent album, Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations) will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at Element, 1642 N. Las Palmas, Los Angeles, CA 90028. The black carpet proceedings will commence promptly at 7:30 p.m., and will showcase a special performance by both Dr. West and Smiley from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Dr. West is elated to share with his friends and followers that he has found a new record label home at Hidden Beach Recordings (HBR), an independent label with commitment to cultivate and distribute inspiring, spiritually-edifying soul music.

This occasion will allow attendees to experience Dr. Cornel West’s vision first hand as they sample various songs and excerpts from Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations. Dr. West’s album, which was released via Hidden Beach on August 14th of this year, is a stimulating infusion of soul, hip hop, and socio-political dialogue. The album includes collaborations with musical moguls such as Prince, Andre 3000, Jill Scott, Talib Kweli, Black Thought and many more. Dr. West, author of the American classic Race Matters, has taken this opportunity to highlight the African American musical imprint on American history while tactfully empowering our youth to help affect change in our underserved communities! “I think the younger generation, you see, they look at me and they say, ‘What is this old brother doing in hip-hop?’ And I say, ‘Well, I am the Curtis Mayfield, Stax, Motown, Philly sound version of hip-hop.’ So I consider myself in the hip-hop community.”

Admission for the event is free for individuals who RSVP at http://www.youthtoleaders.org/rsvp while space is available. A $20 donation will be requested at the door the day of the event for attendees who did not RSVP.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Tavis Smiley Foundation, a non-profit Smiley founded to provide leadership training and development for youth ages 13-18. To date more than 6,000 teens have participated in the foundation’s Youth to Leaders training workshops and conferences.

Cornel West Feature

So who has the most influence on how African-Americans think and live their lives? Most would say Oprah Winfrey … her empire of television, publishing, entertainment is built on messages of upliftment.

But what about the intellectual empire of Dr. Cornel West? He describes himself as a non-Marxist Socialist — a political theorist who’s worked on presidential bids by Bill Bradley, Al Sharpton and now Barack Obama. He’s written or edited a plethora of books, he’s a professor of religion at Princeton University and this guy’s seriously plugged into pop culture not to mention his recurring role as Councillor West of Zion in the Matrix movie series.

I say Dr. West IS a hip hop artist. This middle-aged dude with big afro and sharp suits has just released his third album. It’s called, “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations”. We aired a sample from that album, a track called “Bushonomics with Talib Kweli”.

With this album, Dr. West is back to critiquing the racism and repression in white America, while challenging African-Americans and rappers like 50 Cent, Snoop and the Game to raise their game where misogyny, homophobia and empty materialism are concerned. Dr. Cornel West is a professor of religion at Princeton University, and his new album is called “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations”.

Last Word – Cornel West

We wanted to leave you today with a cut from Dr. Cornel West’s latest album ‘Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations’… the song is “Dear Mr. Man” and it features vocals from the man we all know as Prince.
